It’s Saturday 31st October!

HAPPY HALLOWEEN!

Well, today is Halloween, this is a huge event here in Spain, celebrated by many. Everywhere is busy today as everyone gets ready for the Holiday. Halloween over here is for the living to remember their lost ones, because it has fallen on a Sunday this year and with the current COVID situation things will be a little quieter that normal, if things were ‘normal’ there would be party's and celebrations going on everywhere.

Better known as El Dia de los Muertos (Day of the Dead or All Souls Day), Halloween in Spain is a three-day celebration that kicks off on October 31st with Dia de las Brujas (Day of the Witches), continues with Dia de Todos los Santos (All Saints Day) on November 1st, and culminates with Dia de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) on November 2nd.
Far from being a commercial holiday, the Spanish Halloween is all about honouring the dead and celebrating the continuity of life. Accordingly, specific customs and rituals can be observed throughout the country, most of them like those in Mexico and other Spanish-speaking nations. For instance, during the Dia de Todos los Santos, which is a public holiday, many families gather at the grave of their deceased relatives with holy water, flowers, food, and drink to rejoice and socialise.
This week has been busy for us, we had lots of new jobs come in and some more enquiries into our services for 2021!

Early in the week, Phil had to climb over one of our client’s walls as the lock on the gate had ceased up and would not open. He had to go over the wall to try the key in the lock on other side. And it worked! After lubricating the lock we got it open and all is fine now but was funny watching him clamber over… LOL.

We have also been out and about this week, we went up to La Marina, a beautiful place with a lovely beach, just nothing much else there!  I suspect you’d would need a car it you needed to go anywhere such as shopping, restaurants etc.

We also stopped at Guardamar del Segura to have a look around the open market, as things happen, there was no market! Maybe it is a seasonal event or maybe been forced to close due to COVID – we’re not sure! There are some nice shops there and you can stroll down to the beach front where there are more bars and restaurants. Nice walk but it does seem to be seasonal there and again not much going on.

We also went for a look around Sant Pola. This is like a little Torrevieja with a lovely marina to walk around. Lots of nice bars, restaurants, and shops to go look around. There is a boat trips to a little island Tabarca, sailing only takes 15 mins to get there, we didn’t have time to go on the trip on this occasion but think it is something we will doing in the near future.

On Friday we were out to a job today in Torrevieja, the Police are out ‘in force’ stopping people, checking cars and vans, this is something we are not use to as we don’t get it back in UK, it very normal here to see a lot and the Police, they are very assertive here you don’t mess with them, the polar opposite to the Police in the UK.

Like many other areas in Spain, we have had our borders closed here in Valencia to try and control the spread of COVID, we can leave Valencia but only for specific reasons. Bars and Restaurants have had a tightening of controls imposed, all must close earlier and everyone must be home between midnight and six in the morning!

Take care everyone, stay safe!

Jack’s xx
